Rizal Day
Today is Rizal day in the Philippines. He is the national hero of the Philippines and he is a Filipino hero who is honored in many countries like the United States, Spain, Germany, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Peru and Mexico.
A Historical Footnote: On December 30, 1896, Jose Rizal was executed at Bagumbayan field (now Rizal Park), in Manila by the colonial rulers of the Philippines. On the eve before his execution, Rizal wrote:
“Farewell, dear Fatherland, clime of the sun caress’d,
Pearl of the Orient seas, our Eden lost!
Gladly now I go to give thee this faded life’s best,
And were it brighter, fresher, or more blest,
Still would I give it thee, nor count the cost....”
“I die just when I see the dawn break,
Through the gloom of night, to herald the day;
And if color is lacking my blood thou shalt take,
Pour’d out at need for thy dear sake,
To dye with its crimson the waking ray.” (Zaide, 1997)
These words as well as his works and martyrdom have endeared him to the Filipino people.

A Christmas Message
To everyone: “Have a meaningful Christmas and a happy New Year.”
To the victims of tropical storm “Sendong”: You were not predestined to a life of tragedy and poverty. Christ came that we may have life and have it to the full. This day we remember the angel who announced to the shepherds --- the disadvantaged people during Christ’s time --- the birth of Jesus Christ, the good news of great joy that is for everyone….
The Christmas season signals the end of a painful past, a difficult journey or a ceaseless wandering and marks the beginning of a triumphant entry into a brave new world.

A Holiday Season Story
It is less than a week until Christmas and it is quite natural to be reminded of the Nativity scene or the birth of Jesus Christ. It goes like this as written in the “Good News Bible: Today’s English Version (TEV)”:
“Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David. Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David. He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him. She was pregnant, and while they were in Bethlehem….She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger….”
“There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks. An angel of the Lord appeared to them…and said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. This very day in David’s town your Savior was born – Christ the Lord.’”

Sincere Condolences During the Holiday Season in the Philippines
The destruction caused by typhoon “Sendong” was quite troubling. Houses were washed away, vehicles --- including trucks ---- were carried away and landscapes were completely devastated and re-shaped.
I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to the people who lost their loved ones during this year’s holiday season due to typhoon “Sendong,” which passed over the Visayas and Mindanao.
