This is the commemorative marker of the Pugad Lawin Shrine. The shrine is located in Pugad Lawin, Quezon City, which is near Congressional Avenue and which is populated by people coming from the lower and middle classes.
Pugad Lawin was the place where the Filipino revolutionaries (katipunero) led by Andres Bonifacio gathered and tore their cedula (community tax certificates) as symbol of their fight for the liberation of the Philippines from Spanish colonial rule.
The declaration of independence of the Philippines from Spanish colonial rule by the katipunero on August 23, 1896 is known in Philippine history as the "Cry of Pugad Lawin."
The "Cry of Pugad Lawin" signaled the end of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines and marked the beginning of the Filipinos' long armed struggle against foreign imperialism and invasion.
